Jihadists kill five soldiers in central Mali by AFP Staff Writers Bamako (AFP) Sept 12, 2021 Jihadists killed five Malian soldiers in an ambush in central Mali on Sunday, the Malian army said. A military patrol "vigorously reacted to an ambush by an as yet unidentified armed terrorist group" at midday in the Macina Circle, the army said in a statement, adding that three attackers also died. In addition, five Malian military vehicles were burned and three of the attackers' vehicles were destroyed, the same source said. Earlier, the UN Mission in Mali (Minusma) announced that three of its peacekeepers were wounded on Saturday by an explosive device near its camp in Kidal, in the northeast of the country. Since the outbreak of independence and jihadist rebellions in the north in 2012, Mali has been plunged into turmoil that has left thousands dead, many of them civilians, despite the support of the international community and the intervention of UN, French and African forces. The violence, intermingled with inter-communal conflicts, has spread from the north to the centre of the country, which has become the main focus, and then to neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger.
Nigeria extends northern telecoms blackout as military hits bandits Kano, Nigeria (AFP) Sept 10, 2021 Nigerian local authorities have extended a telecom shutdown in northwest Zamfara state to a neighbouring state as part of an ongoing military crackdown on gangs behind a series of mass kidnappings, an official said Friday. Nigerian security forces in Zamfara last week began one of their largest recent operations against the armed gangs, known locally as bandits, in an attempt to halt the surge in violence.
