UN airstrikes in C.Africa target 'heavily armed' militia
Bangui, Central African Republic (AFP) Feb 26, 2017 - UN peacekeeping mission MINUSCA said it had conducted airstrikes in the Central African Republic Sunday against a "heavily armed" group of fighters advancing on the city of Bambari.

This is the second time in as many weeks the UN has fired on gunmen moving toward the central city.

In a statement, MINUSCA said it spotted about 40 fighters from the Popular Front for the Renaissance of the Central African Republic (FPRC), "heavily armed with AK47s and RPGs (rocket propelled grenades)" on Sunday morning a few kilometres north of Bambari.

It remained unclear whether the airstrikes resulted in any casualties, though the mission alerted the International Red Cross for any possible injuries, a MINUSCA spokesman told AFP.

The region has seen rising violence as the result of a conflict between the FPRC and a rival group, the Union for Peace in Central Africa (UPC).

The two factions have been fighting for control of taxes levied on Fulani herders during the current seasonal migration.

On Tuesday, MINUSCA said four of its officers were injured by FPRC fighters in the village of Ippy, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) northwest of Bambari.

On the weekend of February 11, UN attack helicopters opened fire on about 300 men advancing on Bambari in pickup trucks mounted with machine guns.

Following the offensive, the UN Security Council "urged the armed groups to immediately halt the fighting and join the peace and reconciliation dialogue".

The United Nations has deployed 12,000 peacekeepers to the Central African Republic to help restore stability following a war in 2013 that erupted after the overthrow of leader Francois Bozize, a Christian, by Muslim rebels from the Seleka coalition.

France is to send a contingent of counterterror forces to help the army in Niger after militants ambushed a military patrol killing 16, the defence ministry said.

The decision, announced late Saturday, was taken following a request from President Mahamadou Issoufou after Wednesday's attack near the border with Mali.

The deadly ambush, which took place in an area some 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of Niamey, the capital, also wounded another 18 Niger troops, with the army blaming "terrorist elements".

Following talks with Issoufou, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said France was preparing to send a detachment of troops "to help our Niger colleagues."

A French military source said it would include 50 to 80 troops, most of them special forces, who would be operational in the area "within three days." They would be equipped with aerial support capacity to provide backup for Niger forces on the ground.

The troops are part of Operation Barkhane, a French counterterror operation whose mission is to target jihadist groups operating in the Sahel region south of the Sahara Desert.

Set up in 2014, the operation comprises around 4,000 soldiers who are deployed across five countries -- Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso. In Niger, it operates four Mirage 2000 fighter jets and five Reaper drones for gathering intelligence.

Niger shares its southern border with Nigeria which has been struggling with a bloody seven-year uprising by the Boko Haram extremist group that has so far claimed more than 20,000 lives.

The insurgency began in northeast Nigeria but has since spread to Chad, Cameroon and Niger.
