China 'shocked' by violent dispute at Madagascar factory

Multi-vehicle highway collision kills 12 in China: Xinhua
Beijing (AFP) Dec 13, 2014 - A multi-vehicle collision and subsequent fire on a southern Chinese expressway killed 12 people early Saturday, state media reported, the latest fatal road accident in the country.

The pileup occurred in Guangdong province at about 2 am on Saturday (1800 GMT Friday), Xinhua news agency said, citing local authorities.

The accident happened when a brake malfunction caused a truck carrying wood to roll, triggering collisions with three trucks, a minibus and a car coming from the rear, Xinhua said. Those vehicles subsequently caught fire, it added.

In addition to the deaths, three people were slightly injured in the pileup and were being treated in hospital, the report said.

Fatal road accidents are a serious problem in China, where the highway network and number of new drivers are expanding rapidly while traffic laws and safety are widely flouted.

At least 38 people were killed when a van carrying inflammable liquid hit a bus on a highway in central China in July, Xinhua reported at the time.

And at least 42 people were killed when fire engulfed a bus during rush hour in the city of Xiamen in eastern China's Fujian province in June last year.

China's embassy in Madagascar said Saturday it was "very shocked" by a violent labour dispute at a Chinese-run sugar factory in the west of the island that resulted in four deaths this week.

A spokesman at the embassy told AFP in a statement it was "regrettable" that "troublemakers incited by people with bad intentions" were using violence at the Sucoma plant.

The embassy also complained that Malgasy authorities were not upholding a duty to protect the factory.

On Wednesday, clashes between police and Sucoma workers demanding the release of two of their leaders who had been arrested turned deadly, with two people killed and nine wounded. The plant's sugar stocks were also looted.

On Thursday, a policeman and a soldier posted to the factory were slashed to death with knives.

The Malagasy workers at the plant are demanding better wages, and contracts for seasonal workers.

The embassy insisted the Chinese company that owns the plant was respecting local laws, and said it had created many jobs in the town of Morondava.

It said it was up to Madagascar's government to handle the matter so that "negative influences" are not felt on the island's investment climate.

China's vast investment in countries across Africa has led to social unease in some countries, with the visitors sometimes accused of exploiting workers.

Two people have died in violence at a Chinese-run sugar refinery in western Madagascar, the country's prime minister said Thursday. "There are two dead and a part of the refinery has been destroyed," said Roger Kolo. The unrest appears to have been sparked by a dispute over wages and contracts for local seasonal workers and Chinese managers. Police intelligence director Anthony Rakot ... read more
